Why a slow website costs you customers (and how to fix it)

What 'fast enough' means, where load time disappears and six fixes with the biggest impact.

A slow website loses customers before they read a single word. Visitors leave, and search engines notice. Here is what fast enough means, how to measure it, and which fixes give you the biggest return.

What fast enough means

Google looks at three signals: how quickly the largest element appears, how quickly the page reacts to a first click, and how stable the layout stays while loading. A good target is a visible page within 2.5 seconds on an average mobile connection.

Largest element visible

Good
under 2.5 s
Needs work
2.5 – 4 s
Poor
over 4 s

Response to first click

Good
under 200 ms
Needs work
200 – 500 ms
Poor
over 500 ms

Layout shift while loading

Good
under 0.1
Needs work
0.1 – 0.25
Poor
over 0.25

Where the time usually goes

  • Heavy images that were never resized or saved in a modern format.
  • External scripts: chat widgets, trackers and pop-ups all starting at once.
  • Fonts that load late, causing text to jump around.
  • A slow host, or servers far away from your visitors.

A practical plan

  1. Measure first. Test your three most important pages on mobile.
  2. Compress images and give them fixed dimensions so nothing jumps.
  3. Load only what is needed immediately. Everything below the fold can wait.
  4. Cut external scripts back to what you actually use.
  5. Enable caching and serve files from a network close to your visitors.
  6. Measure again, page by page.

What you get

Faster pages mean fewer drop-offs, more enquiries and a stronger base for visibility. Speed is not a goal in itself, but it is the cheapest conversion win available. Want to know where your site stands? Ask for a short check via our services.
